Card Metro Bridge, Kyiv, 1970

1

A 1970 collectible postcard depicting a train on the overpass of the Dnipro metro station and the Kyiv Metro Bridge.

What is shown on the postcard

The image shows a blue metro train passing along the overpass of the Dnipro station of the Kyiv Metro. To the right, one of the monuments on the station’s pylon is visible—a sculpture symbolizing peace. In the background, the Dnipro River flows, with the green area of Hidropark behind it, and new residential buildings of the left-bank part of Kyiv on the horizon. Birch branches frame the shot in the foreground on the right.

Historical note

The Metro Bridge was opened on November 5, 1965, along with the second launch section of the Sviatoshynsko-Brovarska metro line. It is the world’s first double-deck arched structure made of prestressed reinforced concrete. The Dnipro station is an elevated overpass station directly adjacent to the bridge on the right bank of the river.

Present day

Currently, the Dnipro metro station and the Metro Bridge continue to operate as part of the Sviatoshynsko-Brovarska (Red) line of the Kyiv Metro. The general appearance of the station and the bridge structures has been preserved, though the surrounding landscape of the left bank of the Dnipro has changed due to denser high-rise development.
