This 1979 Soviet postcard features a view of the Memorial in honor of the liberation of Mukachevo, once located in the central part of the city.
What is shown on the postcard
The image shows a light stone memorial wall featuring three bas-relief panels depicting Soviet soldiers and civilians. A rectangular slab at the top center bears the Ukrainian inscription “26 ЖОВТНЯ 1944” (October 26, 1944), the date of the city’s liberation. An eternal flame burns in front of the wall. In the foreground, there is a flowerbed with red flowers, and several pedestrians in summer attire are seen walking past.
Historical note
The Memorial of Glory was established in Mukachevo during the post-war years on the former Victory Square (later incorporated into Pushkina Street, now Yaroslava Mudroho Street). It commemorated the Red Army soldiers who died during the liberation of Zakarpattia in October 1944 during the Carpathian-Uzhgorod offensive operation.
Present day
In April 2022, as part of Ukraine’s decommunization and derussification campaign, the memorial complex (including the obelisk and the bas-relief wall) was completely dismantled. The remains of the Soviet soldiers are scheduled to be exhumed and reburied in the city cemetery, and the park area is being redeveloped.
