Card Lenin Street, Kyiv, 1970

1

A 1970 postcard showing a view of Lenin Street (now Bohdana Khmelnytskoho Street) in Kyiv, looking towards Khreshchatyk.

What is shown on the postcard

The image captures the perspective of a cobblestone-paved street looking toward Khreshchatyk. A Škoda 9Tr model trolleybus is visible on the left in the foreground. Soviet-made passenger cars, a truck, and a bus travel along the roadway. Lush green trees line both sides of the street. In the background rises a high-rise residential building topped with a spire and star (Khreshchatyk, 25).

Historical note

The street was established in the 1830s and was named Lenin Street during the Soviet era (from 1919 to 1992, with interruptions). In the post-war period, it formed a key urban planning ensemble opening onto the city’s main thoroughfare, Khreshchatyk. The spired building in the background was completed in 1954 in the Soviet Classicist (Stalinist Empire) style and acts as the visual termination of the street’s axis.

Present day

In 1992, the street was renamed Bohdana Khmelnytskoho Street. Today, it remains one of the central transport and cultural arteries of Kyiv. While the cobblestone paving on this section has been replaced with asphalt, the historic architectural skyline and the prominent high-rise building at the end of the vista remain fully preserved.
