A 1964 postcard showing Lenin Street (now Bohdana Khmelnytskoho Street) in Kyiv, looking towards the monumental high-rise residential building on Khreshchatyk.

What is shown on the postcard

The image captures an asphalted street with road markings and 1960s traffic, including GAZ-21 Volga cars and a yellow trolleybus. Lush green trees line both sides of the road. In the background, rising on a hill, is the prominent multi-story Stalinist Empire style residential building with a spire and star (Khreshchatyk, 25), accessed by a grand stone staircase.

Historical note

The street was laid out in the 1830s–1850s, initially named Kadetska and later Fundukleyevskaya. In 1919, it was renamed Lenin Street. The high-rise residential building in the background, designed by architects A. Dobrovolsky, O. Malinovsky, and P. Petrushenko, was constructed in 1954–1955 to anchor the visual axis of the intersection with Khreshchatyk.

Present day

In 1992, Lenin Street was renamed in honor of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky. The architectural layout of the street and the iconic building at Khreshchatyk 25 remain largely unchanged today, preserved as cultural heritage monuments.
