Historical note
The monument to Lenin on Kherson’s central square was unveiled in 1965. Freedom Square (historically Yarmarkova and later Narodna Square) developed into the administrative heart of the city during the post-war reconstruction period. The House of Soviets building, situated behind the monument, was constructed in the late 1950s in the monumental style of Soviet neoclassicism.
Present day
The Lenin monument in Kherson was dismantled on February 22, 2014, during the Euromaidan events. Later, a memorial dedicated to the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred was placed on the square. Freedom Square remains the city’s central public space, which has been heavily damaged during the hostilities of 2022–2024.
