Historical note
In 1965, the square was officially named after Bohdan Khmelnytsky. The monument to the Hetman, created by sculptor Mikhail Mikeshin, was inaugurated in 1888. The Bell Tower of St. Sophia’s Cathedral, built in the mid-18th century, underwent several reconstructions. The postcard captures the Soviet-era landscape design of the square, featuring a lush public garden around the monument.
Present day
Today, the square has reclaimed its historical name, Sophia Square. The garden surrounding the Khmelnytsky monument was redesigned to open up views of the historic landmarks. The square now serves as a major pedestrian zone and the primary venue for national celebrations and the city’s main Christmas events.
