What is shown on the postcard

The left side of the postcard captures a view of Volodymyrska Street with the Red Building of Kyiv State University on the left. Soviet LAZ buses and passenger cars (Moskvitch, Zhiguli) are seen moving along the road. High pyramidal poplars line the sidewalk. The right side of the postcard features a close-up of the bronze monument to T.G. Shevchenko on a high red granite pedestal in the park opposite the university, with several people standing at its base.

Historical note

The Red Building of the university was constructed between 1837 and 1843 in the Classicist style, designed by architect Vincent Beretti. The monument to Taras Shevchenko, sculpted by Matvey Manizer and designed by architect Evgeny Levinson, was unveiled in the park opposite the university on March 6, 1939, marking the 125th anniversary of the poet’s birth.

Present day

Today, the Red Building remains the primary structure of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. The monument and the surrounding park continue to be a popular gathering space and venue for official ceremonies.
