A 1966 Soviet postcard featuring the building of the Kyiv State Tchaikovsky Conservatory.

What is shown on the postcard

The foreground shows a green lawn with shrubs, a pedestrian pathway with a walking figure, and a street with a GAZ-21 Volga passenger car and a bus. The central part of the image is occupied by the monumental three-story building of the conservatory, featuring a light-colored facade, an arched ground floor, and a massive Corinthian colonnade on the upper floors. Chestnut branches frame the composition on the right. In the far left background, the rotunda of the October Palace of Culture is visible on the hill.

Historical note

The conservatory building (now the National Music Academy of Ukraine named after P. I. Tchaikovsky) was rebuilt in 1955–1958 by architects L. Katok and Y. Krasny on the site of the former Hotel Continental, which was destroyed during World War II. The new neoclassical facade design seamlessly integrated into the architectural ensemble of Kalinin Square (now Maidan Nezalezhnosti) and Karl Marx Street (now Arkhitektora Horodetskoho Street).

Present day

Today, the building continues to serve as the main facility of the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine. While the surrounding area and nearby square underwent major renovations in the 1990s and 2000s, the architectural structure of the conservatory building itself has been preserved in its original form.
