Historical note
The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was founded in 1051 by the monks Anthony and Theodosius. In the Soviet period, starting from 1926, the monastery complex functioned as the All-Ukrainian Museum Town. During World War II, in November 1941, the main temple of the Lavra—the Assumption Cathedral—was blown up. At the time of the photograph in 1980, the cathedral remained in ruins, and the Lavra itself held the status of a state historical and cultural reserve.
Present day
In the modern era, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is an active monastery and one of Ukraine’s largest museum complexes, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990. The main Assumption Cathedral was completely reconstructed in its historical style between 1998 and 2000. The Great Lavra Bell Tower and the Trinity Gate Church have undergone comprehensive restoration.
