This 1964 Soviet postcard features an elevated panoramic view of Khreshchatyk, the central street of Kyiv.

What is shown on the postcard

The image captures a curved stretch of Khreshchatyk Street from a high angle. On the left, monumental multi-story Soviet neoclassical buildings are visible. The wide sidewalk is filled with pedestrians, featuring street kiosks and historic lamp posts. A thick line of green trees separates the roadway from the pedestrian area, where Soviet-era passenger cars and iconic yellow-and-blue trolleybuses are in motion.

Historical note

Khreshchatyk was almost completely destroyed during World War II in September 1941. In the late 1940s and 1950s, the main avenue was entirely rebuilt under a unified master plan in the grand Stalinist Empire style. By 1964, the street had already acquired its iconic green look dominated by chestnut trees, which became a lasting symbol of the capital of the Ukrainian SSR.

Present day

Today, Khreshchatyk preserves its post-war architectural ensemble and remains the primary thoroughfare of Kyiv. On weekends and public holidays, vehicle traffic is traditionally restricted, transforming the wide roadway into a pedestrian zone.
