This 1970 Soviet postcard features a view of Kalinin Square (now Maidan Nezalezhnosti) from the side of the October Palace.

What is shown on the postcard

The foreground on the left shows the colonnade of the October Palace of Culture rotunda with a fragment of Ukrainian lettering. In the background rises the multi-story Hotel Moskva. Pedestrians, green trees, and a decorative balustrade are visible between the buildings.

Historical note

The October Palace (formerly the Institute for Noble Maidens) was built in the 19th century designed by architect Vincent Beretti and rebuilt after World War II. Hotel Moskva (now Ukrayina) opened in 1961, designed by a team of architects led by Anatoly Dobrovolsky.

Present day

Today, the October Palace operates as the International Center of Culture and Arts. Hotel Moskva was renamed Hotel Ukrayina in 2001. The area in front of the buildings has been partially reconstructed, and the nearby street is now named Heroyiv Nebesnoyi Sotni Alley.
