A Soviet souvenir postcard from 1986 featuring a panoramic view of Kyiv’s central street, Khreshchatyk.

What is shown on the postcard

The photograph captures a high-angle perspective of Khreshchatyk Street looking towards October Revolution Square (now Maidan Nezalezhnosti). On the foreground right, there are multi-story residential buildings in the Soviet monumental classicist style, including the prominent high-rise with a spire (No. 25). Chestnut trees line the street, while Soviet-era passenger cars and trolleybuses move along the roadway. Numerous pedestrians are visible on the sidewalks.

Historical note

Following its near-total destruction during World War II, Khreshchatyk was completely replanned and rebuilt in the 1940s and 1950s as a unified architectural ensemble. The new development featured residential and administrative buildings made of light brick and faced with ceramic tiles. By 1986, the street served as the primary civic and administrative hub of the Ukrainian SSR’s capital, functioning as both a major transport route and a popular promenade.

Present day

Today, Khreshchatyk retains its distinctive post-war Stalinist Empire architectural character. The buildings shown on the postcard are designated architectural monuments. On weekends and public holidays, the street is closed to vehicle traffic, transforming into a pedestrian zone.
