This 1976 archival postcard captures a lively street scene in Khmelnytskyi on 25 October Street (now Proskurivska) during the Soviet era.
What is shown on the postcard
The image shows a wide city street filled with pedestrians. Along the left side, lush green chestnut trees line the path, separating the sidewalk from the road with a yellow decorative metal fence. The rear of a red-and-white trolleybus is visible on the street. In the center background stands a multi-story light-colored building with balconies, while a large Soviet modernist department store with a glass facade is positioned on the right.
Historical note
Proskurivska Street is one of the oldest streets in the city. During the Soviet period, it was renamed 25 October Street. The area underwent significant modernization in the 1970s; in 1972, the Central Department Store (TSUM) was opened, becoming a key commercial landmark. Until the mid-1980s, active public transit, including trolleybuses, operated along this street.
Present day
Today, the street has reclaimed its historical name, Proskurivska. Its central section has been converted into a fully pedestrianized zone, serving as the city’s main promenade. The TSUM building remains active as a shopping center, and the street continues to be a central public space in Khmelnytskyi.
