Card Khmelnitsky. Department store, 1968

This Soviet art postcard from 1968 features the facade of the central department store in Khmelnytskyi, Ukrainian SSR.

What is shown on the postcard

The image shows the upper section of the facade of the three-story department store building. A sign in Ukrainian reading “УНІВЕРМАГ” (Department Store) is installed on the roof. On the right, part of a slogan beginning with “СЛАВА” (Glory) is visible. One of the window openings features a decorative banner with the dates “1917–1967,” commemorating the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution. The building’s architecture is characterized by classical three-quarter columns and large glass windows.

Historical note

The main department store of Khmelnytskyi was constructed in the late 1950s at the intersection of major city thoroughfares—modern-day Proskurivska Street (formerly 25 Zhovtня Street) and Hrushevskoho Street (formerly Karl Liebknecht Street). The building became an example of post-war Soviet neoclassicism and served as the primary retail hub of the regional center.

Present day

In the contemporary era, the building has retained its original architectural design and continues to operate as a shopping center (TSUM), remaining a recognizable landmark in the historic center of Khmelnytskyi.
