What is shown on the postcard
In the foreground, there is a functional circular fountain with a decorative bowl adorned with bas-reliefs, surrounded by flowerbeds of red flowers (cannas). In the background, amidst the green trees of the square, the white building of the drama theatre with its classical pediment is visible. People in summer clothing of the 1970s are walking along the paths.
Historical note
The Theatre Square in Mariupol was formed around the building of the Donetsk Regional Russian Drama Theatre, constructed in 1956–1960 according to the design of architects O. Krylova and S. Malyshenko. The fountain in front of the theatre was a popular recreation spot for citizens during the Soviet period. The square served as the central recreational zone of the city.
Present day
The drama theatre building was almost completely destroyed in March 2022 as a result of military actions. The adjacent Theatre Square and the fountain also sustained significant damage during the fighting for the city.
