A view postcard from 1968 showing the «Slava» whaling fleet residential house at the corner of Derybasivska and Katerynynska streets in Odesa.
What is shown on the postcard
The postcard shows a five-storey residential building at the corner of Derybasivska St. (No. 14) and Katerynynska St. Built in 1952–1953 to designs by Odesa architects Henrikh Topuz and Valentin Feldshtein in Soviet neoclassical style (Stalinist Empire). The client was the «Slava» whaling fleet — housing for its employees.
Historical note
Whaling was a prominent part of Odesa’s post-war maritime economy. In December 1946 the «Slava» fleet began its first Antarctic voyage — the Soviet fishing fleet’s first such operation. The whalers’ return to Odesa drew large crowds in the city centre.
Present day
In 1982 the building also housed the office of the «Antarctica» fishing fleet. It is listed as a locally protected architectural monument (official name: «Whaling fleet building»). The 1968 postcard records the exterior when the house had long been a familiar feature of the historic centre.
