What is shown on the postcard

The postcard shows the monumental facade of the university’s Red Building facing Volodymyrska Street. Tall deciduous trees grow in front of the building. In the foreground, 1960s Soviet passenger cars travel along the street, including a green car on the left. Green bushes frame the scene.

Historical note

The main building of the university was constructed between 1837 and 1843 in the Classicist style, designed by architect Vincent Beretti. The building forms a closed quadrangle with an inner courtyard. The signature red color of the walls combined with the black details of the columns and cornices matched the colors of the ribbon of the Order of Saint Vladimir, after whom the university was originally named. In 1939, the university was named after Taras Shevchenko.

Present day

Today, the building serves as the main campus of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and is designated as a historical and architectural monument of national significance. It has fully preserved its historic appearance, including its famous crimson color, and remains one of the primary symbols of Kyiv.
