A collectible 1972 Soviet postcard capturing the main entrance to the “Brest Hero-Fortress” memorial complex shortly after its official inauguration.
What is shown on the postcard
The image shows a wide reinforced concrete bridge built over the moat, leading to the main entrance of the fortress. Long concrete flower beds are installed along the bridge. Numerous groups of Soviet citizens and tourists are walking along the passage. In the background, a monumental reinforced concrete block with a five-pointed star-shaped opening is visible. To the left and right of the bridge are green slopes, weeping willows, and preserved earthen fortifications.
Historical note
The “Brest Hero-Fortress” memorial complex was officially opened on September 25, 1971. The main entrance is designed as a giant concrete block 44 meters long and 10 meters high, with a star-shaped passage cut through it. This structure rests on the rampart and the walls of the casemates of the eastern part of the Kobrin fortification. The construction was carried out under the leadership of a creative team of architects and sculptors led by A. P. Kibalnikov.
Present day
Today, the memorial complex remains one of the most visited tourist destinations in Belarus. The “Star” main entrance has fully retained its original historical appearance. Visitors can still hear the historical recording of the song “The Sacred War” and the official government announcement about the Axis invasion of the USSR playing through speakers at the entrance.
