This 1960 Soviet color postcard shows the monumental entrance to the Hill of Glory (Kholm Slavy) memorial complex in Lviv.

What is shown on the postcard

The postcard depicts the main entrance to the memorial complex, framed by two symmetrical light stone pylons topped with decorative bronze elements resembling banners or wreaths. In the foreground, well-maintained flowerbeds with red, white, and purple flowers, along with green lawns, are visible. Trees stand in the background, and people in military and civilian attire walk along the central path between the pylons.

Historical note

The Hill of Glory memorial in Lviv was originally established on the site of a cemetery for Russian soldiers of World War I. In the post-war years (1945–1952), it was reconstructed as a pantheon for Soviet soldiers who died in the battle for Lviv in 1944. The official opening of the redesigned complex took place on February 23, 1952. The entrance pylons are made of red sandstone, serving as the architectural boundary of the memorial.

Present day

In the modern period, the Hill of Glory memorial has been a subject of public debate and structural changes. Soviet symbols have been gradually dismantled from the site. In the 2020s, a process of exhumation began to relocate the remains of the soldiers buried here to Mars Field (part of the Lychakiv Cemetery) as part of decolonization policies.
