Card Drama Theater, Cherkassy, ??1973

A Soviet postcard from 1973 featuring the building of the Cherkasy Regional Music and Drama Theatre named after T. G. Shevchenko and the monument in front of it.

What is shown on the postcard

In the foreground on the right stands the monument to the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko on a tall stone pedestal, adorned with a sculpted figure of a kobzar playing a musical instrument. In the background, the modernist three-story building of the drama theatre with a glass facade and rectangular columns is visible. A touring banner with the inscription «ГАСТРОЛИ…» is mounted on the theatre’s roof. To the left of the building, part of the paved square, young trees, and flowerbeds are shown. In the far left background, a building with a neon sign «ТАКСИ» is visible.

Historical note

The Cherkasy Drama Theatre was founded in the 1930s, but the new modernist building shown on the postcard was opened in 1964 to mark the 150th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko’s birth. At the same time, the monument to the poet was unveiled in front of the theatre, created by sculptors M. Lysenko, K. Kuznetsov, and architect L. Lozovsky.

Present day

In July 2015, a major fire broke out in the theatre building, destroying the auditorium and floors. Following a multi-year reconstruction, the fully restored theatre reopened to the public in early 2021. The monument to Taras Shevchenko in front of the building remains unchanged.
