What is shown on the postcard

The foreground of the postcard features a tall, white multi-story building, identified as the House of Books. A sign with the word “КНИГИ” (Books) is visible on its lower commercial floors. The overall background consists of typical urban structures and vegetation of that era. The inscription “Днепропетровск” is in the upper right corner.

Historical note

The House of Books in Dnipropetrovsk opened in 1976 on what was then Karl Marx Avenue. It was a modern, multi-functional building for its time, combining one of the city’s largest bookstores on its lower floors with residential apartments above. This was an important cultural and commercial landmark, reflecting the urban infrastructure development of Soviet Ukraine. The building quickly became one of the city’s recognizable symbols.

Present day

Today, the former House of Books continues to stand at Dmytro Yavornytskyi Avenue, 59, in modern Dnipro (renamed from Dnipropetrovsk). While its function as an exclusive bookstore may have evolved, the building retains its architectural appearance and remains part of the urban fabric. The nearby building with columns is part of Oles Honchar Dnipro National University.
