A collectible 1982 Soviet postcard featuring a panoramic view of the balneological resort city of Truskavets, Lviv Oblast, Ukrainian SSR.

What is shown on the postcard

The photograph captures a general panorama of Truskavets, taken from one of the surrounding hills. In the foreground, there is a green grassy slope transitioning into dense trees and low-rise buildings. A curved railway line is visible on the right. In the background, multi-story Soviet-era sanatorium buildings constructed in the second half of the 20th century rise above the greenery. The horizon is framed by the rolling hills of the Carpathian foothills under a blue sky with light clouds.

Historical note

By 1982, Truskavets was one of the largest and most popular mineral water resorts in the USSR. The town’s main development during this period was associated with the exploration of new mineral springs (primarily ‘Naftusia’) and the large-scale construction of massive sanatorium complexes (such as ‘Yantar’, ‘Rubin’, ‘Almaz’, ‘Krystal’, etc.) designed to accommodate thousands of visitors simultaneously. The urban planning integrated modernist high-rise architecture with extensive forest park zones.

Present day

Today, Truskavets retains its status as a major balneological center in Ukraine. Many of the giant Soviet-era sanatoriums have been reconstructed and continue to operate as hotels and health resorts. The town’s landscape has evolved with denser development, new private villas, modern pump rooms, and updated tourist infrastructure, while the surrounding forests and hilly terrain remain characteristic features of the area.
