Historical note
Kyiv’s Central Stadium (previously known as the Khrushchev Republican Stadium, All-Ukrainian Stadium) was opened in 1923. For the 1980 Summer Olympics, the sports complex underwent a major reconstruction: the stadium bowl was modernized, new floodlight masts were installed, and the stands were upgraded to accommodate up to 100,000 spectators.
Present day
Today, the arena operates as the National Sports Complex Olimpiyskiy. Ahead of the UEFA Euro 2012 football championship, the stadium underwent a comprehensive reconstruction, which included the installation of a membrane roof over the stands, completely transforming its architectural appearance.
