Card Brest Fortress. Former Red Army club. The barracks of the citadel, in 1973

A 1973 multi-view tourist postcard capturing the ruined defensive structures of the Brest Fortress Citadel: the former Red Army club and the circular barracks.

What is shown on the postcard

The three-panel postcard displays the ruins of the Brest Fortress Citadel. The top section shows the damaged brick building of the former Red Army club with prominent arched windows, with a tour group walking in front of it. The bottom-left panel shows a heavily shell-damaged section of a two-story red-brick barrack wall. The bottom-right panel displays a long, surviving wing of the Citadel’s circular barracks, featuring arched openings surrounded by trees.

Historical note

Before 1939, the Red Army club building served as the St. Nicholas Garrison Cathedral, constructed in the second half of the 19th century. During the defense of the Brest Fortress in June 1941, the former club became one of the key and most heavily fortified strongholds in the center of the Citadel. The circular barracks, spanning approximately 1.8 km and built from durable red brick, served as the primary defensive and residential perimeter of the Citadel, bearing the brunt of the enemy’s heavy artillery bombardment.

Present day

Today, the ruins of the defensive barracks are preserved as part of the “Brest Hero-Fortress” memorial complex, which opened in 1971. The former club building was fully reconstructed in the late 1990s and early 2000s, returning to its original function as the active St. Nicholas Garrison Cathedral.
