What is shown on the postcard
The equestrian statue of the hetman on a tall pedestal dominates the frame; asphalt paving, scattered trees and historic facades surround the square. The card records the period when the square was officially named after Bohdan Khmelnytsky.
Historical note
The monument by sculptor Ivan Kavaleridze was installed on St Sophia Square in 1947 (cast in the 1930s). The square is one of the oldest centres of the city, beside St Sophia Cathedral and the Golden Gate.
Present day
The monument remains in place; the square is officially St Sophia Square again. Surroundings have been rebuilt, but the statue and overall composition retain a recognisable historic appearance.
