What is shown on the postcard

The foreground shows the Vorskla River with people swimming. On the left, a small rowboat carrying two individuals is visible. In the center, a wooden diving platform stands in the water with people on it. On the sandy beach to the right, numerous visitors are sunbathing, and a changing cabin is present. In the background, atop a hill, the silhouette of the Holy Cross Exaltation Monastery is visible.

Historical note

The Vorskla River has historically served as the main destination for summer recreation in Poltava. By the late 1950s, the city beaches were actively developed, featuring temporary wooden bathing facilities, footbridges, and diving platforms. The Holy Cross Exaltation Monastery, founded in the 17th century on Monastyrska Hill, was active as a convent at the time of the photo in 1958 (it was subsequently closed in 1960 during Soviet anti-religious campaigns).

Present day

Today, this section of the Vorskla River bank remains Poltava’s central recreational area, known as the First City Beach. The Soviet-era wooden diving platforms are gone, and the beach infrastructure has been modernized. The Holy Cross Exaltation Monastery on the hill has been fully restored and operates as an active convent of the UOC.
