What is shown on the postcard
The photograph captures the bronze sculpture of the poet Alexander Pushkin seated on a pedestal made of black labradorite. The monument is set against the backdrop of dense green and yellowing park trees. Double park lanterns on concrete poles, characteristic of Soviet park architecture, are installed on both sides of the paved area.
Historical note
The monument to A. S. Pushkin in Kyiv was officially inaugurated on June 2, 1962, at the entrance of the park bearing his name (now Ivan Bahrianyi Park). The monument was designed by the prominent sculptor Oleksandr Kovalyov and architect Vasyl Hnyedzhylov. The height of the bronze half-figure was 3.5 meters, while the total height of the monument with the pedestal was 7.6 meters.
Present day
On November 15, 2023, the monument to Pushkin in Kyiv was completely dismantled as part of the country’s decolonization and derussification efforts. Today, the pedestal remains empty, and the park has been renamed in honor of the Ukrainian writer Ivan Bahrianyi.
