This 1966 Soviet postcard features the monument to Alexander Pushkin, which was located at the entrance to the park of the same name in Kyiv.
What is shown on the postcard
The image shows a bronze seated figure of the poet in a contemplative pose on a stone block. The sculpture is mounted on a massive rectangular pedestal made of polished black stone with a gilded inscription. Fresh flowers are placed at the base. Tall birch trees and park greenery form the background.
Historical note
The monument was officially unveiled on June 2, 1962. It was designed by sculptor Alexander Kovalyov and architect Vasily Gnezdilov. The total height of the monument was approximately 7.6 meters, with the bronze statue itself measuring 3.5 meters. The Ukrainian inscription read: “To Pushkin from the Ukrainian people.”
Present day
As part of the derussification and decolonization process, the monument to Alexander Pushkin in Kyiv was dismantled on November 15, 2023. The park where it stood was renamed in honor of the Ukrainian writer Ivan Bahrianyi in the same year.
