What is shown on the postcard
The image features a bronze monument to V. I. Lenin erected on a polished red granite pedestal. In the background stands the monumental five-story regional executive committee building, with its facade adorned with a Ukrainian slogan: “Long live the Communist Party of the Soviet Union!”. A formal parterre lawn with flower beds and trimmed ornamental shrubs stretches in front of the building.
Historical note
The square was planned during the interwar period (1930s) when Zakarpattia was part of the Czechoslovak Republic, serving as the administrative hub of the newly developed Galagov government quarter. The design of the monumental Land Office building (now the RSA building) in the functionalist style was created by the renowned Czech architect František Krupka. During the Soviet period, the square was renamed after V. I. Lenin, and a bronze monument to the Soviet leader, designed by sculptors M. Hrytsiuk and Y. Synkevych, was unveiled here in 1970.
Present day
Following Ukraine’s declaration of independence, the square was renamed Narodna (People’s) Square. The monument to V. I. Lenin was dismantled in 1991. Today, the historic Czechoslovak-era building houses the Zakarpattia Oblast State Administration and the Zakarpattia Regional Council. The square remains the primary administrative and public space of the city.
