This 1977 postcard captures the central administrative square of the city of Dniprodzerzhynsk (now Kamianske) in the Ukrainian SSR.

What is shown on the postcard

The foreground shows a paved public square with lawns, weeping willows, and pedestrians. On the right stands the monument to F. E. Dzerzhinsky on a tall, dark pedestal. On the left is a multi-story Soviet classicist corner building featuring a decorative tower with a spire. To the right is a modernist administrative building with tall vertical glass facade elements.

Historical note

Dzerzhinsky Square served as the primary civic and political center of Soviet-era Dniprodzerzhynsk. The city, renamed in 1936 to honor the Soviet statesman, restored its historical name of Kamianske in 2016. The monument to Dzerzhinsky was erected in the square in 1967 to mark the anniversary of the October Revolution.

Present day

In February 2016, as part of Ukraine’s decommunization campaign, the monument to Dzerzhinsky was dismantled. The square itself was officially renamed Peter Kalnyshevsky Square (Maidan Petra Kalnyshevskoho) in honor of the last Koshovyi Otaman of the Zaporozhian Sich. The surrounding buildings remain in use by the municipal administration.
