What is shown on the postcard

The image captures the main entrance of the museum building designed in the Neoclassical style. It features four monumental Corinthian columns supporting a triangular pediment with decorative acroteria on top. The inscription “МУЗЕЙ” (MUSEUM) is visible on the portico frieze. In the foreground, there is a well-kept lawn with blooming roses.

Historical note

The building was constructed in 1883 according to the design of the prominent architect Felix Gonsiorowski. It was originally intended to house the city public library and the museum of the Society of History and Antiquities. The museum stores a unique collection of historical relics from the Northern Black Sea region, Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome.

Present day

Today, the Odesa Archaeological Museum of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine continues to serve as an important scientific center. The building is designated as an architectural monument of national significance and forms part of Odesa’s historic center, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
