What is shown on the postcard

The postcard depicts the main facade of St. Andrew’s Church with its characteristic five domes and rich stucco decoration. A monumental cast-iron staircase leads to the church. In the foreground, green trees, blooming chestnut trees, and pedestrians, including a woman with a baby stroller, are visible.

Historical note

St. Andrew’s Church was built between 1747 and 1754 on St. Andrew’s Hill according to the design of the prominent architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli. In 1968, the building was declared a museum and became part of the ‘Sophia Museum’ State Architectural and Historical Reserve.

Present day

Today, St. Andrew’s Church is an active church of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and a major tourist landmark at the top of Andriyivskyy Descent. A major restoration of the building and reinforcement of the hill were completed in the 2010s.
