Historical note

The Odesa Opera House was constructed in 1887 according to the designs of the prominent Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, replacing the previous theatre building destroyed by fire in 1873. The architecture combines Vienna Baroque and Italian Renaissance styles. During the Soviet era, the theatre remained one of the city’s key cultural venues, receiving the ‘Academic’ status in 1926.

Present day

Today, the Odesa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre continues to operate as the leading musical and theatrical stage in southern Ukraine. The building is fully restored and listed as a monument of national cultural heritage.
