What is shown on the postcard
In the foreground, the roadway is shown with Soviet passenger cars (including a GAZ-21 “Volga”) and a city bus. To the left is a historic residential building on the corner of Lanzheronivska and Rishelievska streets. Dominated in the center of the frame is the semi-circular facade of the Odessa Opera House with its monumental portal. Pedestrians are seen walking along the pavements.
Historical note
The theatre building was erected in 1887, designed by the famous Austrian architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer to replace the destroyed old theatre. Its architecture is executed in the Vienna Baroque style with Italian Renaissance elements. By the time of this photograph in 1968, the building had undergone several renovations while preserving its original grand appearance.
Present day
Today, the Odessa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre is a monument of national architectural heritage and one of the city’s key landmarks. The theatre remains fully operational, regularly hosting opera and ballet performances. While the surrounding area retains its historic layout, traffic patterns and pedestrian zones have been modified.
