Historical note
The monument to Andrei Zhdanov, a Soviet state official born in Mariupol, was erected in the Teatralnyi (Theatre) Square. Between 1948 and 1989, the city was named Zhdanov in his honor. This postcard was published in 1978, during the period when the city was a major industrial and resort center on the Azov Sea coast.
Present day
In 1989, the city’s historical name of Mariupol was restored. The monument to Zhdanov was dismantled in 1990. The Donetsk Academic Regional Drama Theatre building, visible in the background, was completely destroyed in March 2022 during military actions.
