What is shown on the postcard
The front side of the postcard features a collage of three images. On the left is a close-up of the Vatutin monument surrounded by blossoming trees. The top right corner shows a black-and-white archival photograph of the general on the front line, while the bottom right depicts a military brass band playing trumpets in ceremonial uniforms.
Historical note
The monument over the grave of Army General Nikolai Fyodorovich Vatutin was dedicated on January 25, 1948, at the entrance to Mariinskyi Park (then Soviet Park) in Kyiv. Designed by the prominent Soviet sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich and architect Yakov Belopolsky, the full-length grey granite statue stood on a black labradorite pedestal.
Present day
As part of the decolonization and derussification efforts in Ukraine, the monument to Nikolai Vatutin was dismantled on February 9, 2023. The pedestal was subsequently removed, and the statue was relocated for storage at the Aviation Museum. The exhumation and reburial of the general’s remains from the park remain open questions.
