Historical note
Pushkin Street (formerly Teatralnaya Street) is one of the oldest streets in central Vitebsk, running along the left bank of the Vitba River. It was renamed in 1899 to commemorate the centenary of Alexander Pushkin’s birth. The two-story building in the foreground (house No. 6) was constructed at the turn of the 20th century and housed various municipal departments during the Soviet era.
Present day
Today, Pushkin Street is a designated pedestrian zone and a popular tourist spot in Vitebsk’s historic center. The historic building featured on the postcard has survived and currently houses the State Archive of Vitebsk Region. The architectural ensemble of the street is well-preserved.
