Card Memorial to the liberators of the city. Vitebsk, 1976

A 1976 Soviet postcard depicting the memorial complex dedicated to the liberators, partisans, and underground fighters of Vitebsk.

What is shown on the postcard

The postcard shows the main monument of the memorial complex at night. Three tall reinforced concrete bayonet-obelisks are connected at height by a monolithic sculptural ring with reliefs. An eternal flame burns at the base. In the foreground, a rectangular reflecting pool mirrors the illuminated monument against the dark sky.

Historical note

The memorial complex, commonly known as the ‘Three Bayonets’, was opened on June 30, 1974, on Victory Square. Its construction marked the 30th anniversary of Vitebsk’s liberation from Nazi occupation and the city’s millennium. Designed by chief architect Yakov Shpit, the three 56-meter obelisks represent the three forces that fought the invaders: the Soviet Army, partisans, and underground resistance.

Present day

Today, the memorial remains the central focal point of Victory Square in Vitebsk. During a major reconstruction of the square in 2009–2010, the reflecting pool in front of the monument was replaced with fountains, and the surrounding park was reorganized, though the original bayonet obelisks have retained their historical appearance.
