A historical postcard from 1956, capturing the monumental building of the Palace of Culture of Trade Unions in Minsk shortly after its completion.
What is shown on the postcard
The postcard depicts the Palace of Culture of Trade Unions in Minsk from the perspective of Central Square (now October Square). In the foreground, a group of people in Belarusian national costumes is captured walking across the square. In the background, other Soviet-era buildings along Stalin Avenue (now Independence Avenue) are visible. The scene is framed by green tree branches on both the left and right sides.
Historical note
The Palace of Culture of Trade Unions was constructed in the first half of the 1950s according to the design of architect Vladimir Ershov. Its grand opening took place on July 3, 1956. Designed in the Soviet Neoclassical style, the building features a massive columned portico decorated with pediment sculptures created by prominent Belarusian artists A. Glebov, V. Popov, and S. Selikhanov.
Present day
Today, the building fully retains its historical architectural appearance and continues to function as a cultural center. The square in front of it, renamed October Square, underwent major changes: green spaces were removed during modern reconstructions, and the massive Palace of the Republic was built opposite the historical trade unions building in the late 20th century.
