The 1990 postcard features the Central Bus Station of Minsk, which served as a key transport hub for the capital of Belarus. It provided intercity and international bus connections.
What is shown on the postcard
The image shows the main facade of the bus station building, characterized by Soviet modernist architecture. Above the entrance, a large sign with the inscription “АВТОВОКЗАЛ” (Bus Station) is visible. In front of the building, there is a landscaped area with lawns, young trees (likely birches), benches where people are resting, and tall street lamps. A freestanding pylon sign also bearing the “АВТОВОКЗАЛ” inscription is noticeable.
Historical note
Minsk Central Bus Station, also known as “Moskovsky” or “Vostochny” (though at that time likely more commonly referred to simply as “Tsentralny”), was constructed in 1962. The building’s design was developed by architects from the “Belgosproekt” institute. For a long time, it remained the city’s main bus terminal, handling significant passenger traffic and connecting Minsk with numerous settlements in the BSSR and other Soviet republics.
Present day
The historic building of the Central Bus Station, depicted on the postcard, was demolished in 2007 as part of a redevelopment project for the station area. A new modern multi-functional complex, including a new bus station, retail spaces, and parking, was erected in its place. The new “Tsentralny” bus station building opened in 2011.
