Card House-Museum I Party Congress. Minsk, 1990

This 1990 postcard depicts the House-Museum of the 1st Congress of the RSDLP in Minsk, a building of key significance to the history of the workers’ movement and the formation of political parties in the Russian Empire. The photograph was taken in the evening, emphasizing the historical ambiance of the location.

What is shown on the postcard

The postcard shows the wooden building of the museum, illuminated at dusk, creating a contrast between the bright windows and the darkening sky. Characteristic carved platbands on the windows and a gable roof are visible. Several trees are situated in front of the house; some are bare, while others bear young foliage, partially obscuring the facade. Street lighting is visible along the pathway.

Historical note

The House-Museum of the 1st Congress of the RSDLP is located in the former home of Pyotr Rumyantsev, where the 1st Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP) clandestinely took place in March 1898. After the October Revolution, in 1923, the building was transformed into a museum, becoming the first memorial museum of the revolutionary movement in the history of the USSR. During the Great Patriotic War, the original building was destroyed.

In 1948, it was fully restored according to preserved blueprints and photographs, reopening to visitors. This act of restoration underscored the museum’s importance as a symbol of revolutionary history.

Present day

In modern Belarus, the House-Museum of the 1st Congress of the RSDLP continues to function as a historical and memorial site. Although the ideological significance of the congress has diminished since the collapse of the USSR, the building remains an important architectural monument of the late 19th century and a cultural heritage object. The museum’s exhibition tells not only about the congress but also about the daily life of Minsk residents of that era.
