The 1990 postcard features the House of Government of the BSSR in Minsk, one of the largest pre-war constructivist architectural complexes. The building holds a central position on Independence Square.
What is shown on the postcard
In the foreground of the postcard, a monumental bronze statue of V.I. Lenin on a granite pedestal is visible. Behind it stands the majestic House of Government building, constructed in the Constructivist style with elements of Neoclassicism. The facade of the building is adorned with a large emblem of the BSSR, above which flies the flag of the Belarusian SSR. The architectural complex is characterized by its strict lines, rhythmic alternation of window openings, and massive forms, typical of that period.
Historical note
Construction of the House of Government began in 1930 and was completed in 1934, designed by architect Iosif Langbard. It was one of the first major public buildings erected in Minsk and intended to house the highest state authorities of the Belarusian SSR. The monument to V.I. Lenin, sculpted by Matvey Manizer, was installed in front of the House of Government concurrently with its opening and became an important part of the Independence Square ensemble.
Present day
Currently, the building houses the House of Government of the Republic of Belarus, where the Council of Ministers and the House of Representatives of the National Assembly operate. Despite the change in political system and symbolism, the architectural appearance of the building and the monument to V.I. Lenin are preserved in their original form, remaining one of Minsk’s most recognizable symbols. The BSSR flag on the roof has been replaced with the state flag of the Republic of Belarus.
