Card Dwelling houses on Leninsky Prospekt. Minsk, 1990

The 1990 postcard depicts a panorama of residential buildings located along Leninsky Prospekt in Minsk, the city’s main avenue, now known as Niezaležnasci Avenue (Independence Avenue).

What is shown on the postcard

The foreground of the postcard features a segment of the urban landscape with a wide avenue traversed by cars. To the right, trees with autumn foliage partially obscure the upper sky. The dominant element of the composition is a multi-story residential building characterized by a modernist design. Its end facade is adorned with a monumental mosaic panel, depicting human figures and symbolic elements. An superstructure is situated on the upper part of the building. Other similar residential complexes are visible in the distance.

Historical note

The residential buildings depicted, particularly the “House with Chimes” (Niezaležnasci Avenue, 25), are prominent examples of late Soviet modernism. The main building was constructed in 1979. The mosaic panel on its end facade, created by artists A. Kishchenko and V. Basalyga, is known as “Minsk – Hero City” and is dedicated to the city’s history, its labor and military achievements. The complex of buildings along Leninsky Prospekt (renamed Niezaležnasci Avenue in 1991) shaped the new architectural appearance of central Minsk during the 1970s-1980s.

Present day

Today, these buildings remain an important part of the architectural ensemble of Niezaležnasci Avenue. They retain their residential function, with ground floors traditionally occupied by retail and service establishments. The mosaic panel on the facade of building 25 continues to be a recognizable element of the urban landscape and a cultural asset of Minsk.
