What is shown on the postcard
The image captures a view of the Refectory Chamber with the Church of Saints Anthony and Theodosius (left and right in the foreground) and the Great Lavra Bell Tower (center background). On the left, the monumental Byzantine-style dome of the Refectory Church is visible, surrounded by smaller gilded domes. On the right stands the two-story Refectory Chamber, crowned with a single dome. In the background, the multi-tier Great Bell Tower rises with its golden dome. Green treetops are visible in the foreground under a clear blue sky.
Historical note
The Refectory Chamber and Church were built in 1893–1895 according to the design of architect Vladimir Nikolaev, replacing an older 18th-century refectory. It is the youngest monumental building in the Upper Lavra complex. The Great Lavra Bell Tower was erected in 1731–1745 designed by Johann Gottfried Schädel. In 1970, the territory of the monastery functioned as a state historical and cultural reserve.
Present day
Today, the architectural complex of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Refectory Church and Chamber are fully restored, hosting services and guided tours. The Great Bell Tower has also been renovated and is open to tourists as an observation deck.
