The postcard depicts Central Square in Chernivtsi during the summer. On the left, the three-story Classicist City Hall building stands with its two-tiered clock tower. Historical note
Central Square (formerly Ringplatz) began to take shape at the end of the 18th century. The construction of the City Hall, designed by architect Andreas Mikulich, took place between 1843 and 1847. During the Soviet era, the square was reconstructed; in 1951, a monument to Vladimir Lenin was erected here, which was subsequently dismantled in 1992 following Ukraine’s independence.
Present day
Today, Central Square remains the main civic and tourist hub of Chernivtsi. The City Hall building has retained its administrative function, housing the city council. Historically and culturally preserved, every day at noon a trumpeter in traditional Bukovinian attire climbs the town hall tower to play the melody of the famous local song “Marichka.”
