Historical note
Theatre Square (previously Elizabeth Square) began to take shape at the turn of the 20th century, replacing former military warehouses. The surrounding buildings, designed in Art Nouveau (Secession) and Eclectic styles, emphasized the European character of Chernivtsi.

The former Jewish National House now serves as the Central Palace of Culture, while the former Chamber of Commerce and Industry is occupied by the Bukovinian State Medical University.
