Historical note

Soviet Square (historically Ringplatz, now Central Square) has served as the administrative and social heart of Chernivtsi since the late 18th century. The building in the background is the former Bukovina Savings Bank, built at the turn of the 20th century in the Vienna Secession style, designed by architect Hubert Gessner. During the Soviet period, the square was redesigned with flowerbeds and green spaces.
