This collectible two-part postcard from 1987 highlights key memorial sites in the city of Krasnodon (now Sorokyne), Luhansk Oblast, deeply connected to the history of the “Young Guard” underground resistance organization.
What is shown on the postcard
The left side of the postcard depicts the main entrance of Secondary School No. 1, named after Maxim Gorky. The white-brick building is decorated with a Soviet coat-of-arms bas-relief. A festive banner reading “Godspeed, dear graduates!” hangs above the entrance, with school children in Pioneer neckerchiefs standing outside. To the left is a decorative stand with red flags. The right side shows the memorial urn monument installed on the mass grave of the Young Guard heroes in the adjacent park, with visitors standing nearby.
Historical note
School No. 1 in Krasnodon is historically significant as the educational institution where many future members of the anti-fascist “Young Guard” underground organization studied during the German occupation. The memorial urn monument in the Komsomol (now Gorky) Park was erected in the post-war period at the burial site of the executed resistance fighters, whose bodies were recovered from the shaft of Mine No. 5.
Present day
In modern Sorokyne (the official Ukrainian name of the city since 2016), the building of School No. 1 retains its educational status and is preserved as a historical heritage site. The memorial complex in the park and the monument over the mass grave continue to exist, serving as reminders of the tragic events of World War II.
