What is shown on the postcard
The image captures a close-up of the two-story main terminal building, designed in the Soviet neoclassical style with a colonnade, portico, and a small tower with a flagpole. Historical note
The Kherson River Station building was constructed in the post-war period, during the 1950s, to accommodate the growing passenger traffic along the Dnieper River and the Black Sea coast. Its architecture combines elements of classical order and Soviet monumental style. The terminal linked Kherson via regular passenger routes with ports on the Kakhovka Reservoir, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Kyiv, and local dacha settlements in the Dnieper Delta.
Present day
In the post-Soviet era, regular high-speed passenger services along the Dnieper declined significantly, and the building partially lost its original transport volume, primary serving seasonal suburban dacha boats. Due to military actions and infrastructure damage in the region during 2022–2023, regular navigation and the operation of the river station were completely suspended.
