What is shown on the postcard

The image shows a panoramic view of the memorial complex. In the center of the composition rises a tall, dark obelisk with a sculpture of a Soviet soldier holding a shield at its base. Groups of school children in light-colored uniforms are lined up on the paved square in front of the monument. The square is surrounded by dense green trees. At the bottom of the postcard, there is a white strip with the inscription “ПОЛТАВА • POLTAVA • ПОЛТАВА”.

Historical note

The Memorial of Soldier’s Glory in Poltava was officially opened in 1969 to commemorate the 26th anniversary of the city’s liberation from Nazi occupation. The authors of the project were sculptor E. Kuntsevich and architects I. Mezentsev, G. Kisly, and L. Khikhlych. The 22-meter obelisk is made of grey granite, and an Eternal Flame burns at its base.

Present day

Today, the memorial retains its original architectural appearance and is located in the Ivan Kotlyarevsky Park. It remains a site for commemorative events dedicated to the victims of World War II.
